Janne's Castle (#533)

Beautifully restored Castle with breathtaking views. An exclusive & romantic Wedding venue.

An historical Castle in the hills overlooking Lake Montedoglio that provides the ideal setting for a romantic Tuscan wedding. Also well suited for Conventions and Seminars.

Restoration of the Castle was completed in 2005 with all the original features retained. It has also been comfortably furnished once again with a full respect for the historical value of the Castle.

The property which enjoys panoramic views consists of 5 double bedrooms (1 can be alternatively made up as a twin), 3 luxury bathrooms and one separate cloak room, modern fully equipped kitchen with dining table, additional dining room and reception hall, spacious lounge and a library. The accommodation is available exclusively to groups that book the property for a wedding or other special event. There are other rental properties available for large groups in the immediate vicinity.

On the lower terrace is the private pool overlooking the lake with outdoor dining on the upper terrace. A separate stone patio directly off the kitchen is able to comfortably accommodate groups of up to 50 and one of the best catering companies in the area is based just 15 mins from the Castle.

For weddings it is possible to arrange live Medieval music and a flag waving display, the ideal venue for a truly original Tuscan celebration.

History

There is strong evidence that the site where the Castle stands has been occupied since about 200 AD. At this time the Romans built the first road from Arezzo to Rimini over the Apennines. The remains of the road pass through the hamlet and Janne believes that the origins would have been as a simple watchtower. Roman ceramics and coins have been found, over the past 5 decades.

The Castle itself is believed to date back to 1000AD with the original structure expanded in the 12th and 14th centuries with the addition of the main bastion and the existing two towers. The building received its last facelift during the Renaissance and was severely damaged during World War II.

Local folklore has it that there were 4 towers originally, one on a corner above the bastion and the other where the cemetery lay inside the walls, on the North flank.

The overlords in the 14th century were a family named Tarlati who seem to have controlled a substantial part of this area from their base at Pietramala, in the mountains above Arezzo. In 1405 they conceded sovereignty to the Medici in Florence and it is pressumed that this included Brancialino.

It is recorded that in 1383 the inhabitants of Brancialino (probably under the command of the Tarlati) became involved in a dispute with the city of Arezzo - and lost. The lords of Florence exacted retribution for this act of folly. Either Brancialino paid a great fine or the walls would be pulled down. Evidently the citizens coughed up the fine as the walls were (largely) still standing.

The church was rebuilt but today is no longer in general use, except for an annual ceremony of thanks for largely escaping the plague, or Black Death, in 1644.

The next reference is in 1626 when the occupiers of the land are described as the Bitti family. They were here for a further 110 years and were followed by the Bardelli family, who remained until 1940.

Location

The castle is on a knoll 600 metres above sea level with a sweeping view of the lake and far mountains, approx. 20km away. This part of the Apennines is known as the Alpe della Luna- Mountains of the moon.

The castle is just 2 km from the nearest bar/restaurant and the closest town is only 10 minutes further on. Hence a truly tranquil spot is adjacent to bustling life – fantastic!
